The Heshima blanket
Dignity is like a unit of measurement when it comes to keeping one’s word, keeping one’s promise, earning the trust of others, or social responsibilities. Being poor and free is better than being rich and enslaved. To hold one’s head high and to be able to look others in the eye is better than to lock oneself in a prison of dishonour and indi-gnity. Even far from their native land and their first origins, the African individual wants their dignity to be preserved. During their lifetime or after their death, the Afri-can wants their life to be worthy of celebration. The colour white symbolises the di-gnity that must never be soiled. The black stripes with white lines remind us that every human encounter is an opportunity to show your worth. *Heshima means in Swahili.
